The Plan Completeness Meter tracks the progress of your hurricane plan. It's our little way of helping you keep the finish line in sight.

Emergency Essentials Checklist: Food and Water

Food

Hurricanes often cause widespread power outages. Keeping a supply of non-perishable food will ensure you will not go hungry in the days following the storm.

  • 4-day supply of nonperishable food
  • Manual can opener
  • Plastic plates, cups and utensils
  • Refrigerator thermometer to check for spoilage

Drinking Water

Flooding may damage the water system, leaving you and your family without safe drinking water.

Based on the number of people and pets in your plan, we recommend that you stock up on:

  • 9 gallons of water (a 3-day supply)

Sanitary Water

If the water system is damaged, you may also require a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. As a storm approaches, line the bathtub and/or a large garbage can with a plastic sheet and fill it with water.

  • Plastic sheet to line bathtub or large container
